On-premises development using kitchen-vcenter
Test Kitchen is certainly one of the core tools for developing Chef projects. But while most development and testing is done on AWS, Azure or local machines, some customers have the desire or even some requirements to work in their own datacenters running on VMware vSphere.

The kitchen-vcenter driver allows you to do exactly this: develop and test on infrastructure which might be identical to the on-premises systems, using the same VMware templates and system/network configurations to minimize surprises on production deployments.

Topics of this session:
* Basics of the underlying technology
* Speed up development using Linked Clones and the Guest Operations API
* Improve feedback cycles by connecting to new Windows servers within seconds
* Work in Progress: How to develop on “disconnected” VMs which are not reachable via network

Guest Keynote : Did Twitter Save Bletchley Park?
After a visit to Bletchley Park in 2008 Dr Sue Black started a campaign to save the site. Using her network she quickly got coverage in traditional media: appeared on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and on the BBC News. It wasn’t until she started using Twitter however that the real positive changes began to happen. Social media and the way it can connect like minded people so quickly really ramped up the campaign bringing together thousands of people to make a positive difference. Sue discusses traditional vs social media and campaigning, what works and why. She has now written a book about the campaign: “Saving Bletchley Park”

WORKSHOP : Building and deploying .NET applications with Chef Habitat and Azure Pipelines
In this deeply technical hands-on workshop, we will "skip ahead" to life beyond legacy migrations and discuss the tools and techniques used to build modern .NET Core apps using the Azure DevOps platform.

We will focus on building an ASP.NET application and look at the options and platforms available for building and managing the application once it has been deployed, including containerisation. We'll study the new Build and Release capabilities of Azure Pipelines and discuss the workflow of designing and building a CI system suitable for your enterprise as well as integrating Chef Habitat into the workflow.

Attendees will leave with an improved understanding of how .NET applications are built, deployed and can be continuously updated in production when combined with the powerful operational capabilities of Chef Habitat.

Attendees do not need Azure or .NET knowledge before attending this workshop but it would be useful to familiarise themselves with some of the terminology (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/devops/user-guide/services?view=azure-devops and https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/guides/developer/azure-developer-guide are two useful guides worth reading).
